After his childhood, he returned to Madrid where has lived ever since. His parents and his origins were Galician. He studied in the Lycée Français in Madrid, and from a very early age he showed a special interest in art and architecture. He studied architecture at the University of La Coruña, obtaining a brilliant academic record. After graduating in 1996, he founded an architectural firm in the Galician capital along with other colleagues, naming it A-cero (inspired by the paper size, the beginning of something…). From that initial group, the two current components of A-cero, Joaquín Torres and his partner Rafael Llamazares, architect, continue.

The existence of the architectural firm A-cero started mainly in La Coruña and the Galician Community. And from the very beginning a specific philosophy was established: the concept of modern architecture inspired by art, specially by sculpture, and by great architects and contemporary designers as well as by certain life experiences, trips…

They soon created a personal character/style that has remained consistent throughout their business career.

This persistence in the creation of a unique type of architecture (too daring for some) which could be found even in their first interior design projects, gave A-cero a certain prestige, being finalist of the FAD awards in two occasions. The projects carried out, which were their best calling card, and the intense marketing efforts carried out by Joaquín, led to their arrival in Madrid and, although single-family homes continued to be the base of their activity, they started developing their first great buildings, such as the office building of the M-40 in Madrid, the showroom at the Paseo de La Habana 3, also in Madrid, and the Social Science building at the University of La Coruña.

In the last few years, their activity intensified, with the promotion of the interior design and landscape gardening departments, culminating the conceptual model of architecture as a whole: Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Gardening.

The internationalisation process of A-cero took place very swiftly, after winning a private tender for the development of a 500.000 m2 complex in Dubai. New projects were started in this Emirate, such as the skyscraper Wave Tower, or the creation of the The Heart of Europe in the artificial islands The World Islands.
